Iowa vs Missouri - Insight Bowl 2010:

The Insight Bowl announced at 7:15 CST that the Iowa Hawkeyes are bound for Tempe, Arizona to face the Missouri Tigers in a Black and Gold Shootout.

Get ready for the 100-Year Black and Gold Shootout in the Desert

Iowa (7-5) and Missouri (10-2) will play in the 2010 Insight Bowl on December 28 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ. Iowa is 3-4 all-time against Missouri, but the two schools have not played each other since 1910.

Most fans had been anticipating a showdown with another border state, Nebraska.  The Insight Bowl thought otherwise.

As Gazette reporter Mike Hlas points out, if the Insight Bowl made their selections according to everyone's prediction, an Iowa-Nebraska game would likely have shatter any previous attendance record for the bowl game in Tempe.

So what does the Insight Bowl decide to do?  Invite Missouri instead.

The reasoning in selecting Mizzu over Nebraska?  One last kick-in-the-ass to the Cornhuskers from the Big 12.  The Big 12 conference doesn't wants a 3.5 hour Big Ten highlight reel for their Insight Bowl, so it could be theorized that the conference lobbied the bowl to choose otherwise.

Bowl politics are no different than normal politics.

Iowa and Missouri have played one common opponent this season--Iowa State. The Tigers beat the Cyclones 14-0 in Ames. Hawkeyes smashed the Red Crows 35-7 in Iowa City.

According to Scott Dochterman, Iowa is financially responsible for selling 12,750 tickets to the Insight Bowl, highest among the non-BCS bowls.

The Tempe-area is crawling with Hawkeyes, so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

For some Iowans, Phoenix is the place to start their professional careers.  For others, it's a popular place to settle  down for retirement.

As more Iowans expatriate to the Valley of the Sun, more Iowa Club game-watch locations sprout up around town. As of last count, there were at least six different locations in the valley dedicated to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

There is the Sandbar, an upscale Mexican grill tucked away in Scottsdale that's chalked full of young Arizona coed servers and bartenders, dressed in Tigerhawk apparel. The Phoenix Iowa Club will be posting information on events and activities that are being planned for the area.

In Glendale, there is a game-watch location called The Copper Door conveniently located not far from the University of Phoenix stadium, where the BCS National Title game is played.

The city of Mesa has two Hawkeye game-watch locations, as well. The Mexican restaurant Salty Senorita and the Irish pub O'Kelley's are both packed with fans wearing black and gold.  And let's not forget the game-watch location at 16th Street Bar & Grill, a Biltmore sports bar landmark.  Kinnick's, located in Scottsdale, is the newest of the locations.

I'm an incredibly lucky girl. For someone who has made some very foolish mistakes and had some tough lessons to learn very quickly, I am still incredibly lucky.
